Unfortunately, some of the websites did not meet the standards defined in the rubric.

During the current judging cycle, we found many of the local firm’s self-promotion websites had their ranking lowered due to one or more of the following:

  • Web standards not being followed, e.g., no link to Home, atypical navigation, missing footers, etc.
  • Typographical rules and standards not being followed.
  • Lack of Informational Hierarchy.
  • Lack of standard linking to Adobe or other products needed to support the website.
  • Poor (or non-existant) degradation of the website.
  • Flash websites that do not load without javascript enabled.
  • Improper Flash detection.
  • Outdated or depreciated techniques / technology.
  • Table-based layouts.
  • Canned-looking and/or Template-looking design.
  • Lack of User Centered Interface Design (UCID) principles.
  • Heavy use of stock photography.
  • Websites with bugs.
  • Misleading (or non-existant) error messaging.
  • Typographical errors and dead-links.

    Derrin is adjunct Web Design and Interactive Media (WDIM) faculty at The Art Institutes International Minnesota (Ai). He teaches many WDIM disciplines including Computer Applications, Interactive Motion Graphics, Interactive Motion Scripting, Fundamentals of Scripting, Advanced Scripting Languages, Dynamic Web Applications and Portfolio Preparation.

    Derrin holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Multimedia & Web Design from The Art Institutes International Minnesota.

    As Director of Development at Grandpa-George Design and Interactive, Derrin leads all technology direction and technical aspects of Grandpa-George’s projects. He also brings the strategic strengths of web standards, usability, HTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP to the agency.

    Prior to founding Grandpa-George, Derrin was an Associate Interactive Media Designer at Target Interactive and a Front-end Developer at Clockwork Active Media Systems. He has worked for clients like Target, Mentiium Corporation, Wazzel, Carlisle Tire and Case IH Agriculture.

    Douglas is full-time Web Design and Interactive Media (WDIM) faculty at The Art Institutes International Minnesota (Ai). He teaches many WDIM disciplines including Usability, User Centered Interface Design (UCID), Project Management, Project Team, Senior Portfolio, Portfolio Preparation, Fundamentals of Interactive Media Design, Typography, Advanced Typography, Design Layout, Fundamentals of Design, Marketing Design, Media Design, Package Design, Digital Illustration, Portfolio Foundations, Computer Applications, Electronic Design, and Publication Design.

    Douglas holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Interactive Media Design from The Art Institutes International Minnesota and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Drawing and Printmaking from the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh. He also holds a Six Sigma Black Belt Certification.

    Passionate about good design and web standards, Douglas leads the Art Direction at Grandpa-George Design and Interactive. He also brings the strategic strengths of usability, typography, color theory and user centered design to the firm.

    Douglas is actively working on SHOWOFF | What is the Perfect Portfolio? This will be an industry response to the student question of “What should be in my portfolio?”

    Prior to founding Grandpa-George, Douglas was a Quality Re-engineer and Project Manager for 7 years at American Express Financial Advisors, a Web Designer at Star Tribune, and an Associate Interactive Media Designer at Target Interactive.

    Matthew is adjunct Web Design and Interactive Media (WDIM) faculty at The Art Institutes International Minnesota (Ai). He teaches many WDIM disciplines including Writing for IMD, User Centered Interface Design (UCID), Print Production and Project Management.

    Matthew holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with Aviation Applications, and both Masters of Aeronautical Science summa cum laude in Aviation/Aerospace Management and Aviation/Aerospace Operations from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He is also a certified Flight Attendant, Silver Congressional Award winner and an Eagle Scout.

    Matthew is MOM – Mega Office Manager at Grandpa-George Design and Interactive. Running the business for the agency, he takes care of clients, interns, contractors and Partners alike. He also brings the strategic strengths of web standards, usability, quality and testing, content strategy and project management to the agency.

    Prior to founding Grandpa-George, Matthew has held positions with Bank of America as a process engineer, Federal Aviation Administration as a quality engineer and Northwest Airlines / Delta Air Lines as a web developer, content strategist and process engineer.
